Richard Annison had served for over nineteen years in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, fifteen years of which he spent in India. He had seen action in the Tirah Campaign of 1897 to 1898, and in the South African War. In 1910, for the benefit of his wife’s health, he retired on pension from the Army with the rank of Sergeant and moved to Derby, where he was employed as a motor-man with the Derby Corporation Tramways. He re-enlisted on 25th August 1914, joining the 9th Notts & Derby Regiment, with whom he sailed to the Dardanelles on 1st July 1915.
1911 Census: Richard Williams Annison was a 35 year old tram conductor, of 9, St. Augustine's Street, Derby. He was the husband of Winifred Mary Annison (40), and the father of Mary (7).
